idocrase / vesuvianite
アイドクレーズはカルシウムとアルミニウムを含む正方晶系のソロ珪酸塩で、ヴェスヴィオス山の溶岩中に発見されたためにヴェスヴィアナイトとも呼ばれます。
通常は接触変成岩中のスカルン鉱物として生成し、ガーネット、ウォラストナイト、ダイオプサイド、トルマリン等を伴います。結晶はピラミッド型の端を有するプリズム型で、ジルコンの結晶に類似します。ただしアイドクレーズの結晶においては多くの場合先端部に卓面がみられる点がジルコンと異なります。アイドクレーズの結晶は柱状の集合体として産出することが多く、粒状あるいは巨大な塊状を呈することもあります。
アイドクレーズはガラス光沢あるいは油脂光沢を有し、通常は緑色または茶色ですが、ときに黄、青、赤色となります。主要な変種として非常に大きな緑色の集合体をなしジェイドに類似するカリフォルナイト(californite)、銅を含み青色を呈する稀少変種サイプリン(cyprine)、ニューヨーク州アミティに産する黄褐色の透明石ザンサイト(xanthite)が挙げられます。モース硬度6.5、比重3.32～3.47。
Idocrase is a calcium aluminium sorosilicate mineral crystallizing in the tetragonal system. Its other name Vesuvianite derives from Mt. Vesuvius where it was first discovered within included blocks or adjacent to lavas. Idocrase is found characteristically in crystalline limestones resulting from contact metamorphism and associated with such minerals as garnet, diopside, wollastonite, and tourmaline.
Idocrase crystals are frequently well formed and are usually prismatic with pyramidal terminations, often terminated with the basal pinacoid; thus they have some similarity to the crystals of zircon, except that zircon rarely shows the basal pinacoid. It commonly occurs in columnar aggregates but may be granular or masiive.
The luster is vitreous to resinous. The color is usually green or brown but may be yellow, blue, or red. What is more important as gem material is the massive green variety, called californite, which has some resemblance to the jades.
Cyprine is a blue variety containing copper, and is so called after Cyprus, which was the ancient source of copper. This variety is seldom found. A transparent yellowish-brown idocrase which is found at Amity, New York, has been called xanthite after the Greek word for yellow. Hardness is 6.5 on Mohs's scale. Specific gravity is 3.32-3.47.
