　シンハライトは長い間ぺリドットの褐色変種であると考えられていましたが、1952年にペリドットとはまったく異なる新種の鉱物であることが判明しました。
　シンハライトという名称はスリランカの古名シンハラに由来し、「スリランカ石」という意味です。その名のとおり、宝石質のシンハライトはジェム・グラヴェル（水に運ばれて磨耗した宝石質の小石）としてスリランカにのみ産出し、その色は鉄の含有量によって淡い黄褐色からゴールデン・ブラウン、緑褐色、黒色にいたるまでさまざまです。淡い褐色、緑褐色、濃い褐色の顕著な多色性を示します。蛍光性はありません。

Sinhalite had long been mistaken for "brown peridot", its dark color and higher SG ascribed to its 
iron content, until it was found out to be a completely new mineral species in 1952. 
 Sinhalite derives its name from Sri Lanka's old Sanskrit name Sinhara. True to its name the mineral is 
found almost exclusively as water-worn pebbles from gem gravels of Sri Lanka. Sinhalite has different 
depths of colors - from pale yellow-brown to golden or greenish brown to black, in relation to its iron 
content. It also shows distinct pleochroism of pale brown, greenish brown, and dark brown. Sinhalite 
does not luminesce.
